Bats

 We started our unit learning that a bat is not a bird. Bats and birds both have wings, fly and eat insects. Bats are mammals and give birth to live baby bat pups.  Bats are nocturnal, sleeping during the day and hunting for insects using echolocation at night.  

 We read many books and listen to many videos about bats to do our research.

 We use vocabulary cards to help us spell interesting words about bats.

          I love bats because they are good hunters. Bats hang by their thumbs.  The vampire bat sucks blood from cows and horses.  Bats have echolocation.  Bats have claws on their feet.  Bats don't have feathers but have fur.  The moms drop their babies off at the roost.  They are going to hunt for food.  They live in dark places.  Bats have babies in the spring.  They come out at night.  They are mammals and see at night too.  Some bats eat fish, insects, fruit, and nectar.  Some bats hibernate. Bats are brown and black.

          I like bats because they have echolocation. Bats blood only goes one way.  Bats come out at night.  Bats have claws to hang upside down with.  Only three species of bats suck up blood.  They use their echolocation to find their babies.  I like that they stay together to stay warm.  Bats suck up blood to stay alive.  Maybe people are scared of bats because they suck up blood.  They do not suck peoples blood.  Some bats eat insects.  I love to spot bats. I love how they hang upside down.  Bats have five fingers and on thumb with a claw.

          I  know that bats are cool to look at.  I never saw a bat before.  Bats are so cool in the dark.  A bat is warm blooded.  I know they can eat 500 insects in a day.  I would love to see the bats in the cave.  Some bats eat the fruit from a tree.  I know that bats can fly.  A baby bat drink milk from the mother.  I love to find bats in the dark.  The bat can see in the night. The bats are so cool.

          Bats are mostly seen in the dark.  There are many types of bats.  Vampire bats can suck mammal's blood.  Some bats eat fruit and others eat insects. There feet have claws.  They use echolocation to call out when they fly.  A baby bat is called a pup.  The pup and its mother snuggle together to keep warm.  Bats are brown and black.  Bats have fur and can fly.  Bats hibernate because it gets to cold.
