Proud to be an American

Our country is the United States of America.   It is our home.
We are proud of our country. We love our country.

November is a good time to study the United States
because Election Day and Veteran's Day happen in November.

What is red, white, and blue and flies? The U.S. flag!

The American flag has 50 stars. Each star stands for a U.S. state.
Our flag is red, white, and blue.  People fly the flag outside their homes and other places.
It is also known as Old Glory and the Stars and Stripes.

Three Cheers for the Red, White and Blue.

Three Cheers for the Red, White and Blue.

The Flag of America forever.

Three Cheers for the Red, White and Blue.

 Hip Hip Hooray!
Hip Hip Hooray!
Hip Hip Hooray!

We say the Pledge of Allegiance to honor our country.

We also sing songs about our country.
We sing them at school or at special events. One of those songs is our national anthem. The name of that song is "The Star-Spangled Banner.”
We also learned the song "G-d Bless America".

G-d Bless America
G-d bless America, land that I love

Stand beside her and guide her

Through the night with the light from above
From the mountains to the prairies

To the oceans white with foam

G-d bless America, my home sweet home
G-d bless America, my home sweet home

What is a symbol?
A symbol is an object or a sign that stands for something else.
The United States has many symbols.

Bald Eagle
The bald eagle is our national bird. It was chosen in 1782. The bald eagle is a symbol of strength and freedom. Pictures of the bald eagle can be seen on U.S. money and stamps.

The White House
The White House is a symbol of our country and the presidency. It is where the president lives and works. It is located in Washington, D.C. That is our nation's capital. George Washington never lived in the White House. Why? It had not been built yet!

The Liberty Bell
The Liberty Bell is a symbol of freedom. The bell arrived in Pennsylvania in 1752. It was made to call people together for special announcements. The bell cracked when it was rung the first time. People tried to fix the bell, but it cracked again. Today, it hangs in a museum in Pennsylvania.

Independence Hall
Independence Hall is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Many of the most important documents in U.S. history were written at Independence Hall. The Declaration of Independence was adopted here. The Constitution was written here and signed on September 17, 1787. • Independence Hall was also the home of the Liberty Bell for over 200 years.

 The Seal of the U.S.
On July 4, 1776, the great seal for the United States of America was created. The seal has 13 stars, stripes, arrows and olives for the 13 first states. It is used for important papers and passports.

The Statue of Liberty
The statue of Liberty is located in New York, at 151 feet tall.  The Statue of Liberty symbolizes freedom throughout the world. The Statue was a gift from the people of France. The statue, made of copper and iron, is green.  Her right hand holds aloft a burning torch that represents liberty.

We visited American monuments.
Monuments are built to remember important people or events.
A monument can be a statue or a building.

The Washington Monument
The Washington Monument is an obelisk in Washington DC to honor our first president, George Washington. It stands over 550 feet made of cut stone and is the world's tallest.

Mount Rushmore
Mount Rushmore is in the Black Hills of South Dakota and is a national memorial.  Mount Rushmore is rock carving of the faces of four great U.S. Presidents. They are: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

Voting
We learned and participated in an election. We discovered that voting is a way to make choices and decisions.  We voted on what to have as a reward for having ten class stars and what is our class' favorite pet.  We had registration cards, ballots, a voting booth and "I voted" stickers.

The voting line was so very long. We needed our registration card to vote.

Counting the ballots and tally to find the winners.

Yeah! We earned suckers and found out cats are the favorite pet.

Veterans Day!
We honor the Americans that served in the Armed Forces.
What better way to celebrate than a parade.

We want to thank all those who have served and are serving to protect us and keep us free.

We are proud to be Americans!
