Apples, Apples and Apples!

Apples are a very popular topic for study in kindergarten and first grade.  Apples are so American due to their history being intertwined with the settlement of pioneers who moved West in our country.  Johnny Appleseed, Johnny Chapman, gets much of the credit for the spread of apples across our nation.

We used all our senses to find out about apples.   We read about apples, measured them. graphed our favorites, chopped them, cooked them, and most importantly, tasted them!

Other learning objectives for our apple lessons included:

knowing that there are different varieties of apples that have different colors and tastes; being able to identify the parts of an apple, and understanding the life cycle of an apple.

We made a super easy and healthy recipe of homemade applesauce in a slow cooker in our classroom! First we washed, then peeled the apples, making sure to sample the peels.

After chopping up the apples, we added lemon juice and stirred.  Then we sprinkled them with cinnamon and sugar in the pot and stirred.

The Next Day.........

We strained the juice from the cooked apples and
tasted the apple cider.

Cheers!

The applesauce was yummy and tasty too!

Delicious!
